A Romanian flight, which was grounded in France with approximately 276 Indian passengers due to suspected human trafficking, landed in Mumbai early Tuesday. The flight, operated by Romanian company Legend Airlines, had been held in France for four days before French authorities allowed its resumption. The aircraft, departing from Dubai and bound for Nicaragua, faced delays as some passengers initially resisted returning to India.
Of the original 303 passengers, 27, including two minors, stayed back in France and applied for asylum. The grounding occurred based on an anonymous tip indicating potential human trafficking involvement.
Two individuals were taken into custody in France on suspicion of being part of an illegal immigration operation linked to the flight. French authorities extended their detention for up to 48 hours. The Indian Embassy in France expressed gratitude to French authorities for swiftly resolving the situation and facilitating the return of Indian passengers.
While the trip was suspected of being part of a plan to reach Central America, the airline denied involvement in human trafficking. Human trafficking in France carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years.
